Anush Newman

Director, JMAN Group

Route to JMAN Group:
I was there at the beginning! After a Chemistry MSc from Cambridge, 4 years of consulting and a year in Industry with BT, I started as an independent consultant with a limited company called JMAN Group in 2010. Today, we are a genuine Group, with a great team that is growing quickly. We now work across many sectors and with different types of clients, with one goal in mind – using whatever tools at our disposal to solve clients’ problems. My experience is in strategy and operational consulting across a wide range of sectors; I spent 4 years at Arthur D. Little working on projects in the Telecoms, Energy and Public sectors, ranging from pure strategy and due diligence, to process and organisational re-design in the UK, Europe, Middle-East and China. I previously spent 12 months as part of the internal strategy team at BT OneIT and completed 4 summer placements in the chemistry R&D Laboratories of GlaxoSmithKline. Our aim at JMAN Group is to find better ways of doing things, for our clients and for the people who work for us. We respect traditional consulting and advisory methods, but are always looking to use new tools and techniques to solve problems and get better results. Cross-pollination is something we are keen on – from technology, various industry sectors and walks of life, we use different ideas from wherever we can find them to make us better. It certainly makes for an interesting journey.

Outside of JMAN Group:
I’m a sports fanatic who continues to play cricket for The MCC and a variety of wandering sides, as well as hockey for The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC), on a strictly amateur basis. I also try to spend as much time as possible with my lovely family, and occasionally succeed in doing so!

Jack Thorpe

Consultant, JMAN Consulting

Route to JMAN Group:
My initial consulting experience came in the summer of my second year whilst studying Chemistry at Bristol University, when I completed a summer internship with Aon Hewitt in the Investment Consulting division. After graduating in 2015, I decided to explore the consulting industry further and completed a six-month internship at Arthur D. Little (at the same time at Tom) obtaining experience in organisational restructuring, commercial due diligence and public sector projects. Deciding that I needed a break after all my hard work, I took four months off to travel around the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia. On my return, I contacted Tom and heard how much he was enjoying JMAN Group. I decided to get in touch with Anush and after a 10-week internship, I am now joining JMAN as a full-time consultant.

Outside of JMAN Group:
My two main passions are sports and travelling. My sport is (you guessed it) hockey and at Bristol I was a member of the 1st XI and was president of the club in my final year. I am also always looking to visit new country’s and experience new cultures.

Fraser Sym

Consultant, JMAN Consulting

Route to JMAN Group:
I discovered my interest for Science at Manchester Grammar School and explored this further whilst studying Natural Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) at The University of Nottingham. Then I turned my eye to business with an MPhil in Management at Cambridge University Judge Business School. During the summers I partook in various internships in the Consulting, Investment Banking and Marketing sectors. My final internship was at JMAN Group during summer 2015 which resulted in the role I am in today.

Outside of JMAN Group:
Sport is my main pastime outside of work. I currently play hockey, golf, tennis and squash and I enjoy reminiscing about the rugby days. In fact I enjoy all forms of healthy competition, perhaps a trait I inherited from my three older siblings. I also really enjoy travelling. I find meeting people from diverse cultures very interesting and that it provides a good perspective. Most recently was an incredible trip to South America, and next on the list I’m thinking The Philippines.

RORY PRESTON

Consultant, JMAN Consulting

Route to JMAN Group:
My undergraduate degree was at Cambridge University, where I read Economics. In my final year, while involved with the University Hockey Club, I was put in contact with JMAN Group, who were interested in sponsoring the Varsity Match. Having read about the company I decided it was just the sort of thing I was interested in, and took up a summer internship after finishing my finals. I was immediately given an interesting project, in trying to work out how a sports governing body might better use the data available to it to hit their participation targets set by Sports England. Having enjoyed the early responsibility that a small company brings, I decided to join permanently after completing a Masters in Edinburgh. My Masters was in Statistics and Operational Research, in the School of Mathematics, and I hope to bring the same quantitative tools and approach required to my work at JMAN.

Outside of JMAN Group:
Outiside of JMAN, I enjoy playing and coaching hockey, having won 3 Blues while at Cambridge and having played for Grange HC while in Edinburgh. I also enjoy acting, which is something I intend to take up again now I’m in London.

LLOYD HILTON

Consultant, JMAN Consulting

Route to JMAN Group:
The latest in a growing line of keen JMAN scientists - I completed an MSc in Chemistry at Cambridge in 2015, specialising in DNA Origami Engineering. Having spent the summer of 2012 giving out medals at the London Olympics, and the following year dabbling in executive search, I sought out JMAN for an internship in 2014 and haven’t looked back since.

Outside of JMAN Group:
As a keen middle distance runner and former national 800m champion I can usually be found running on various routes around the city. I’m also a football fan, occasional cyclist, and long-time black belt in Bujinkai Karate. When not playing or watching sport I like to travel and recently spent 5 months in Central and South America.

TOM HUDSON

Route to JMAN Group:
Whilst studying a Masters in Engineering at Cambridge, it was around my third year that I realised it was the broader aspects of problem solving, communication, and creating data-driven conclusions that I loved the most. Off I ventured into the world of consulting, with internships at JMAN Group and Arthur D Little lined up after graduation. Fast forward six months and I am excited to be back at JMAN Group, really enjoying the work I do.

Outside of JMAN Group:
Outside the office I still manage to play rugby, although now at a slightly more leisurely pace, and enjoy going to music concerts and festivals whenever I can.
